Home Battery Storage Permit Requirements in Utah (2025)
Last updated: June 2025
How Utah Battery Permits Work
Utah has the Utah State Construction Code enforced by local jurisdictions. Every city and county requires permits for residential battery storage. The Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL) licenses electrical contractors statewide. Utah's growing population in the Wasatch Front has driven permit office improvements in recent years.
The Permit Process
Salt Lake City uses an online permit portal through the Community and Neighborhoods department. Sandy, West Jordan, Orem, and Provo have their own permit offices with similar 7–14 day review times. Rocky Mountain Power's residential interconnection application takes 3–5 weeks for standard residential storage.
Documents Required
Required: permit application, single-line diagram, UL 9540 spec sheets, Utah DOPL-licensed electrical contractor, site plan. Utah does not require PE-stamped drawings for standard residential electrical permits.
