Pre-Permit Phase

Step 1: Confirm your AHJ and permit requirement
Call or visit your local building department. Ask: "Do I need a permit to install a residential battery storage system?" Get the answer in writing if possible.

Step 2: Choose a licensed installer
Verify your installer's state electrical contractor license is current. Ask whether they handle permit filing as part of their service.

Step 3: Get a permit cost estimate
Ask your installer to itemize permit fees in the quote: permit application fee, inspection fee, and permit-handling charge. Use our Cost Estimator to verify.

Step 4: Get HOA approval (if applicable)
If your community has an HOA, submit your design drawings for HOA review before applying for the city permit. HOA approval is typically required before construction begins.

Step 5: Prepare the permit application package
Your installer prepares: permit application form, single-line electrical diagram, site plan, UL 9540 spec sheets, and contractor license info. Review all documents before submission.

Permit Approval and Installation
