How North Carolina Battery Permits Work
North Carolina has a state-coordinated building code system. The NC Building Code Council sets standards adopted statewide. NC adopted the 2020 NEC. Every city and county requires permits for residential battery storage. Duke Energy Carolinas and Duke Energy Progress serve most of NC and have residential interconnection application processes.
The Permit Process
NC cities generally process permits through local building inspection offices. Charlotte (Mecklenburg County) has an online permit portal with 7–10 day review times. Raleigh-Durham metro cities are typically 7–14 days. Duke Energy's residential interconnection process takes 3–5 weeks and runs parallel to the building permit.
Documents Required
Required: permit application (NC standard form), single-line diagram, UL 9540 spec sheets, NC licensed electrical contractor info (NC State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors), and site plan. NC requires electrical contractor licensing for all permitted electrical work.
