Home Battery Storage Permit Requirements in Michigan (2025)
Last updated: June 2025
How Michigan Battery Permits Work
Michigan has the Michigan Building Code (MBC) enforced by local building departments. Michigan adopted the 2015 NEC (with updates in some jurisdictions to 2020 NEC). All residential battery storage installations require a permit. The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) licenses electrical contractors.
The Permit Process
Most Michigan cities process residential electrical permits in 7–14 days. Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Ann Arbor, and Flint all have online permit portals. DTE Energy serves SE Michigan; Consumers Energy serves much of the rest of the state. Both have residential interconnection application processes for grid-tied battery storage.

Required: permit application, single-line diagram, UL 9540 spec sheets, Michigan LARA-licensed electrical contractor info, site plan. Michigan requires an EC2 electrical contractor license for residential work.
