Home Battery Storage Permit Requirements in Massachusetts (2025)
Last updated: June 2025
How Massachusetts Battery Permits Work
Massachusetts requires permits in all jurisdictions. The Massachusetts State Building Code (780 CMR) incorporates the IBC and NEC. All electrical work must be performed by a licensed electrician (MA Board of State Examiners of Electricians). MA adds a 6% Architectural Access Board surcharge to all building permit fees.
The Permit Process
Most MA cities have online permit portals. Boston uses Inspectional Services Department (ISD) and can take 3โ5 weeks. Smaller cities and towns are typically 1โ2 weeks. Eversource covers eastern MA; National Grid covers western MA โ both have residential interconnection applications for grid-tied storage taking 3โ5 weeks.
Documents Required
Required: permit application, single-line diagram, UL 9540 spec sheets, MA licensed electrician info (Board of State Examiners license), site plan. Some MA cities require asbestos certification for any work in homes built before 1980 โ typically not triggered by electrical-only permits, but confirm.
